Over 400 state roads were closed by the flooding, including Interstate 95 North, which was reduced to one usable lane in some counties and closed entirely in others.

Hurricane Florence and Flooding in Raleigh

In September 2018, the Cape Verde Hurricane Florence generated record freshwater flooding in the Carolinas. She broke an estimated 28 flood records in both states. This hurricane caused over $24 billion in damages in total. Despite its making landfall as a category one, its prolonged rainfall created additional complications compared to many other storms.

Damages in North Carolina included:

• 33.9 inches of rain
• Over 2,200 road closures
• More than 90% of New Hanover County lost electrical power
• Insurance losses totaled between $2.8 and $5 billion
• 75,000 structures damaged by flooding and storms

Rivers rose severely. The Cape Fear River’s crested height was 61 feet, while the Pee Dee River crested at over 35 feet. Both figures were record-breaking totals.
