What To Know About Flooding and Your Home

5/4/2020 (Permalink)

Flood waters in your home may require a team of restoration experts to mitigate.

When your Raleigh, home experiences flooding you may notice that some of the materials that comprise your home end up damaged.

Whether you have swelling wood, soggy carpeting or damp drywall, a local restoration service may be able to help. Here’s what you may want to know about what happens when these three materials suffer flood damage.

1. Wet Drywall
When drywall gets wet due to a broken supply line or other water damage it may seem to be extremely difficult to restore. This material soaks in water and can become soggy. Fortunately, your restoration service may be able to perform a flood cut rather than ripping out whole panels. Your restoration crew will count out the drywall about 12 inches above where the flooding stopped and replace only this portion. They can then paint over the flood cut so that it looks as though the damage never occurred.

2. Wet Wood
After water damage your home you may experience swelling wood. If this problem is caught soon enough this wood can be dried before it begins to warp and cause structural problems. If possible the wood may be temporarily removed so it can be properly dried.

3. Wet Carpeting
Another item your restoration service can restore after a water pipe repair, is wet carpeting. The exact nature of the restoration may depend on the size and type of the leak. For example rugs can be laundered but for wall to wall carpet, cleaning machines may be required. In many cases it may be possible to use a machine to pull the water out of the carpet, and then perform a carpet washing with appropriate cleaners to ensure no lingering issues such as bacteria or mold. In extreme cases or in the event of black water damage, the carpet may need to be replaced.

Remember, if your home has damp drywall, swelling wood or soggy carpeting it’s important to contact a restoration service to help with repairs as quickly as possible. Quick repairs can help you avoid long term damage in your home, while professional restoration can have your home looking “Like it never even happened.”
